Brighton is a vibrant city known for its historic landmarks, natural beauty, inclusive culture and creative scene.

The population of Brighton and Hove is 296,289. It has grown by approximately 5000 in the last 5 years and is projected to grow in similar numbers in the next 5 years. Our working population is 151,093 with an average wage of £32.5k which is £1.1k below the national average. A high proportion of our population are millennials (25-39) and, while there are less children than in previous years, there are also less people approaching retirement. This means we will have the most generations in the workplace together than ever before. Racial diversity is low in Brighton and Hove compared to other places in the UK – but it is getting more diverse over time. 

Brighton and Hove has a well-educated population with over 50% of residents possessing a degree or Equivalent and Above. In the last 5 years jobs grew more quickly than the population. They are projected to grow by 7,894 over the next 5 years.

Sussex Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) - Future skills Sussex:

The LSIP has been produced by the Sussex Chamber of Commerce, working closely with partners, employer networks and local business leaders across the area with the aim to set out the key priorities to make post-16 technical education or training more responsive and closely aligned to local labour market needs.

The plan takes a collaborative approach to raising awareness of key local sectors and supporting employers to recruit and retain their work force within them. Through our research and analysis of data the LSIP has identified key sectors that are crucial to the future economic success of the area:
