Course Summary

The Law course, along with the exciting trips on offer, will give you knowledge of a broad range of legal topics and transferable critical thinking and problem-solving skills. During the course, there will be ample opportunities to develop your debating skills when discussing key issues such as the influence of the media on the law, lawful justifications for harm and killing, and discussion of liability for offenders. We develop the skills of dealing with scenario questions to apply the law to clients, to give detailed legal advice, as well as analysis and evaluating critical areas of law, through studying a wide range of cases, and justifying our opinions.

Course Details

Students will develop knowledge of the law in England and an awareness of the law in a global and European context. Subjects include:

• English Legal System and Criminal Law
• Law Making and Tort Law
• Nature of Law and Contract Law

All students engage in a Mock Trial, provided to us by a London law firm, allowing the students to dissect evidence, creating cross-examination questions for the defendant and witnesses, before giving closing statements to the jury, all with feedback being provided by a Criminal Solicitor in London.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

You will sit three exams of equal length and weighting.

Entry requirements

At least five GCSEs graded 9-5 including English at grade 6 or above.

Equipment required

There may be trips that enrich the curriculum, such as visits to the Hastings Magistrates Court to have a full tour of the process of the court, as well as watching local trials, and visits to partner universities to gain an understanding of the next stage of your academic journey in Law.

Your next steps...

A Level Law is used to progress onto a single discipline at university or as part of a joint honours’ degree. It is also an important component in many other degrees such as Business Studies and involves many transferable skills for many other disciplines. Studying Law leads to careers such as a solicitor, barrister and legal executive. Recent developments also mean that you can do a higher-level apprenticeship in Law and progress into the profession.
