Planning for Your Future
Planning is an important process that supports you and your family as you prepare for adulthood.
If you have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), it’s crucial to get the right support from your school as you think about your future. If you have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), your planning should start by the time you reach year 9 (around age 13).
Here’s what you need to know:
- Ask for an education, health and care (EHC) assessment (brighton-hove.gov.uk)
- Be Involved in Your Future: It’s your life, and it’s important for you to take part in planning your future and making decisions about what you want to do.
- Get Support from Your Family: Your parents or carers play a big role in helping you make choices as you plan your next steps. Staying connected with them can help you feel more confident.
- Know Who Can Help You: Familiarise yourself with the key people who can assist you, like Student Support, SENCOs and your SEN Case Worker. They are there to support you.
- After School: Your planning should help you successfully move on to college, training, work, or day services after you finish school. It’s important that you continue to receive the support you need as you become an adult.
- Annual Reviews and Transition Planning: Starting in year 9, your annual EHCP reviews should focus on planning for your transition. These meetings should include the right people from health, social care, and education to explore your future options.
