Financial Support and Benefits
Bursary
If you’re studying at a school/college or training course and aged 16-19, may get a bursary to help with education-related costs (clothing, books and other equipment for the course or transport/lunch). You can apply through the school, college or training provider.
Ask student services or a tutor to explain the procedure. You can apply once you know where you’ll study or train, so you get your bursary as soon as possible.
Types of Bursaries
- Vulnerable Bursary
Up to £1,200 per year for students in defined vulnerable groups, including those in care, care leavers, those receiving Income Support, and disabled young people receiving both Employment Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance.
- Discretionary Bursary
Allocated based on individual needs and circumstances. Schools and colleges determine the amount and criteria, including family income thresholds and specific barriers to education.
Eligibility Criteria
Students must meet the following criteria to be eligible for a bursary:
- Be aged 16-19 at the start of the academic year.
- Be enrolled in a full-time course at a school, academy, further education institution or independent learning provider.
- Meet residency requirements as outlined by the DfE (typically meaning the student has the legal right to reside in the UK for 3 years preceding starting the course).
- Evidence for eligibility will be provided as part of application process.
